Written April 2008Brother and Sister Bikers,
Do you remember when you were taught right from wrong? Don’t think too hard. It’s a trick question. You might have been taught not to lie, steal, or harm others. You were probably taught that there was punishment or consequences for wrong behavior. Most people have a clear understanding of what is right and wrong. We don’t have to be taught but we might have to be reminded.
Knowing right from wrong is designed into us. We are born with moral values.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
This is sometimes referred to as “the golden rule”. It’s a reminder that‘s found in the New Testament of the Bible. We (most of us) were designed with a conscience and we are convicted when we behave contrary to what we know to be right and wrong. Sometimes we choose to ignore those convictions. I did for most of my life.
Some who read this may not believe in God. If something was designed into us, I have to believe that there was a designer. We didn’t just happen by chance and it’s no coincidence that most of us have a clear understanding of right and wrong. If there is no God then why do we care if we do right or wrong as long as we don’t get caught? If there is no God, and we don’t get caught, we might think that there are no consequences for doing wrong. Who get’s to decide what’s wrong and what’s right? Are all of our moral values in perfect agreement?
I do believe in God and I made a decision to have a personal relationship with Him. I communicate with Him through daily prayer and reading the Bible. Some people that say they don’t believe in God or the Bible have never read the book or even a small part of it. How can a person say they don’t believe in something if they haven’t taken the time to find out what it is they don’t believe? (A bit confusing – huh?)
If you’ve never read any of the Bible or if it’s been a while, I want to encourage you to give it a try. I’m not asking anyone to read it all, just a little. There are many good lessons about life to learn from the Bible. I recommend starting with the Book of John. If you don’t want to believe in something, at least read a little to find out what it is that you don’t believe. If you need a Bible, let me know.
Here if you need me,
Chaplain Sonny
